Day One
Arrive Early Afternoon ~ Asheville Breweries & Food
After our early afternoon flight from Minneapolis, we quickly grabbed our rental car at the conveniently small airport. Our destination was the charming Hotel Arras nestled in downtown Asheville. While a rental car is a must for hiking, exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway, and chasing waterfalls, you can easily fill an entire weekend without one. The River Art District, culinary scene, vibrant breweries, and iconic tourist spots like The Art Museum, The Omni, Biltmore Estate, and Lazoom tour bus events offer a plethora of activities. Since we had limited time on our first day, my sister Kellie and I decided to spend it exploring the popular area around our hotel on foot. After handing the car over to the capable valet, we made our way to Wicked Weed Brewing, a lively brewery just a short walk away. As we stepped inside, the inviting ambiance immediately drew us in. We treated ourselves to a delicious lunch accompanied by their Hoppy Flight, a selection of hop-forward beers that set the tone for our brewery tour.
With satisfied taste buds, we continued our journey by strolling towards The River Art District. As we meandered through the area, we couldn't resist exploring the numerous art shops and admiring the vibrant community murals. It was a feast for the eyes, each storefront offering unique creations that showcased Asheville's rich artistic heritage. While window shopping and taking in the artistic charm, we made our way to our next brewery stop: New Belgium Brewing. This brewery holds a special place in Asheville's heart, being founded right in this very city. Not only did it offer exceptional craft beer, but it also boasted a stunning natural setting. We took our time exploring the brewery's grounds, reveling in its harmonious blend of craftsmanship and natural splendor.
As the day started to wind down, we went to The Omni Hotel, renowned for its breathtaking panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains at sunset. The vistas were simply awe-inspiring, painting the sky with a vibrant palette of colors. To complement the visual spectacle, we dined at the hotel's Edison restaurant, enjoying delectable cuisine and raising a glass to the day's adventures. Overall, The Omni Hotel's grounds were equally enchanting, inviting us to take leisurely walks and discover hidden gems along the way. As we retired for the night, reflecting on our action-packed day, we couldn't help but feel grateful for Asheville's vibrant energy and the remarkable experiences it had bestowed upon us. Little did we know that the following days would hold even more delightful surprises, but for now, we cherished the memories created on this captivating first day in Asheville, North Carolina.
Day Two
Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway
Our second day was booked for a full-day road trip down the Blue Ridge Parkway, commencing its scenic journey in Northern Virginia, just south of the captivating Shenandoah Valley. Originally constructed to connect Virginia's Shenandoah National Park with Tennessee's Great Smoky Mountains Park, this remarkable roadway meanders through 29 counties in Virginia and North Carolina. In North Carolina, the parkway predominantly follows the spine of the Blue Ridge Mountains, a distinguished segment of the Appalachian Mountains range. This carefully curated route allows travelers to traverse significant cities and charming towns, enhancing the parkway's allure as a sought-after tourist destination. Extending for a distance of 469 miles, the parkway spans from Northern Virginia to Southwestern North Carolina.
Know Before You Go
For the majority of its course, the parkway offers a leisurely drive along a two-lane undivided expressway. The designated speed limit along the route is generally set at 45 mph, occasionally lower in select areas but always within that threshold.
Mile markers are strategically placed along the parkway, providing convenient reference points for navigation. Travelers can quickly locate overlooks, visitor centers, and interchanges on parkway maps by referring to the corresponding milepost numbers. However, it is advisable to be prepared with either a paper map or a downloaded digital map, as some areas along the drive may have limited or no cell service.
It is important to note that amenities along the parkway are limited. Planning periodic stops for essential needs such as fuel, exploration of delightful towns and cities, and meals is highly recommended. These areas typically offer decent cell service or Wi-Fi connectivity. Ensuring an adequate supply of gas and provisions while on the parkway is crucial, as services may be infrequent. Careful trip planning is essential to optimize your journey, considering the direction from which you are approaching. The Blue Ridge Parkway invites you to embark on a captivating expedition spanning over five days, allowing ample time to explore its numerous attractions. Determining your desired highlights in advance is advisable, ensuring a well-organized and rewarding adventure. Stop 1: Mount Pisgah And Pisgah National Forest
Commence your journey by venturing outside Asheville to the section of the Blue Ridge Parkway near Mount Pisgah and the Pisgah National Forest. As you enter the parkway, make your first stop at Milepost 408.6, where you'll find the parking area for Mount Pisgah Park. This serves as a gateway to several trailheads that invite exploration of the captivating Pisgah National Forest. A little further along the parkway, at Milepost 407.6, the Mount Pisgah Overlook awaits, providing breathtaking vistas and an additional trailhead to discover.
Stop 2: North Carolina Arboretum
Continuing your northward journey on the parkway from Mount Pisgah, you'll encounter the North Carolina Arboretum just off the parkway, opposite Milepost 393. Delight in over 430 acres of stunning gardens and scenic trails waiting to be explored. Admission to the arboretum is free, offering a wealth of activities and experiences. While April to October showcases the vibrant blooming of flowers and plants, the arboretum's natural splendor can be enjoyed throughout the year.
Stop 3: The Folk Art Center
Your next destination is the renowned Folk Art Center at Milepost 382. Immerse yourself in the rich artistic heritage on display, featuring the works of more than 900 talented artists showcased across multiple galleries and shops. While this is the center's primary gallery, you'll also encounter smaller galleries at various stops along the parkway, each contributing to the diverse artistic tapestry.
Stop 4: Craggy Gardens
As you continue your northward journey on the parkway from the Folk Art Center, make sure to include a visit to the captivating Craggy Gardens at Milepost 364.6. Renowned for its natural beauty, Craggy Gardens is a popular stop for travelers along the parkway. The prime time to witness the main attraction of the gardens, the stunning pink and purple Catawba Rhododendron blooms, is during the enchanting month of June.
Stop 5: Mount Mitchell Overlook
A must-see destination awaits you at Milepost 349.9, where the Mount Mitchell Overlook provides a breathtaking view. Towering as the highest peak East of the Mississippi, Mount Mitchell holds historical significance as one of the first State Parks in the United States. You'll be treated to a glimpse of this majestic peak from the overlook. Unforuently for us all we got to see was fog, but the hike was beautiful and quite a workout! If you're interested in exploring further or hiking, consider taking a short detour to Mount Mitchell State Park, about 5 miles away from the parkway and the Mount Mitchell Overlook. The state park offers hiking trails, a nature center, and a museum for a deeper immersion into the area's natural wonders.
Stop 6: Crabtree Falls
Prepare to be mesmerized by the allure of Crabtree Falls, one of the most picturesque waterfalls near Asheville, found at Milepost 339.5. To witness the splendor of this impressive 70-foot-tall waterfall, embark on a three-mile hike along an in-and-back trail. As you make your way to the falls, you'll be surrounded by the beauty of wildflowers, particularly vibrant during the spring season. The nearby bridge overlooking the creek provides an excellent vantage point to admire the waterfall's grandeur.
Stop 7: Museum Of North Carolina Minerals
For a delightful and educational experience, stop at the Museum of North Carolina Minerals, situated at Milepost 331. This charming museum, housed in a small stone building along the parkway, is a favorite among families and offers a fascinating glimpse into the mineral heritage of the region. Take some time to explore the exhibits and discover the geological wonders of North Carolina.
Stop 8: Linville Falls
Another iconic waterfall beckons at Milepost 316.4, where you'll find the famous Linville Falls. These captivating falls, one of the most photographed on the parkway, consist of two distinct cascades flowing into a scenic gorge: the Upper Falls and the Lower Falls. While the hike to the Lower Falls is relatively easier and more popular, you can also embark on a more challenging trek to view the Upper Falls and the gorge. Please note that parking at the visitor area can fill up quickly, so consider parking on the side of the parkway and walking a short distance to the visitor center and trailhead.
Stop 9: Grandfather Mountain Overlook
On your second day of exploring Asheville, the penultimate stop takes you to the Grandfather Mountain Overlook, located at Milepost 306.6. This vantage point offers a stunning view of Grandfather Mountain, an iconic peak in the Blue Ridge Mountains. While the parkway does not provide access to hiking on Grandfather Mountain, you can venture off the parkway to explore the private Grandfather Mountain park if you wish. Regardless, take your time to soak in the beauty of the mountain and appreciate the awe-inspiring landscape.
Stop 10: The Linn Cove Viaduct

Day Three
Chasing Waterfalls ~ Divine Timing
On the third day of our adventure in Asheville, we woke up to a rainy morning, but we knew that these kinds of days are perfect for chasing waterfalls. Luckily for us, Asheville is surrounded by an abundance of neighboring waterfalls, so we decided to seize the opportunity. To fuel ourselves for the day ahead, we made our way to High Five, a charming breakfast spot. There, we indulged in savory ham and cheese biscuits that provided us with the energy we needed. With our appetites satisfied, we set off for our first destination: Dupont State Forest. This forest is renowned for being the epitome of Brevard and Transylvania County's reputation as "The Land of the Waterfalls."
Our hike through Dupont State Forest allowed us to experience a sampler of some of the area's most beautiful waterfalls. We began our adventure at Hooker Falls Access Area parking lot, where we found the entrance to the Hooker Falls Trail near the signboard. The trail led us through a shady mixed evergreen and hardwood forest for about .25 mile. While Hooker Falls may not be the most dramatic waterfall in Dupont, its peaceful atmosphere and easy accessibility charmed us.
After enjoying Hooker Falls, we retraced our steps back to the pedestrian bridge, which passed under the highway bridge, and continued towards Triple Falls. This trail was a bit steep, with a 120-foot elevation gain, but the enchanting beauty of the Little River accompanied us along the way. Upon reaching the base of Triple Falls, we had the option to take a spur trail to a picnic shelter with a falls overlook or continue slightly on and follow the trail to the left. Choosing the latter, we found ourselves descending a staircase to the middle section of the falls, where we could stand on the rocks and fully immerse ourselves in their magnificence. From Triple Falls, our journey led us to High Falls. We stopped at a spur trail to the left for an overview at the top of the falls, taking in the breathtaking vista. Continuing along the High Falls Trail, we embarked on a climb of about .25 miles before reaching a fork. To reach the base of the falls, we stayed to the left, following the Riverbend Trail. The sight of High Falls cascading down filled us with awe and reminded us of nature's grandeur.
Next on our itinerary was a 30-minute drive to Looking Glass Falls, where we could witness the allure of a tall, mystical waterfall from behind. Continuing our journey for another 10 minutes, we discovered Moore Cove Falls, a hidden gem that captivated us with its tranquil beauty. Lastly, our final planned destination for the day was Black Balsam Knob, known for its breathtaking panoramic sunset views. Unfortunately, thick fog obscured our vision, preventing us from fully appreciating the scenery. Taking it as a sign, we returned to Asheville and explored its vibrant streets instead.
Once we changed into dry clothes, we ventured to West Asheville, a neighborhood renowned for its large, vibrant murals. As we roamed around, we found ourselves in the River Art District, where we stumbled upon The Grey Eagle, Asheville's longest-running live music venue. It was an unexpected discovery that made us so thankful for divine timing. That night, we were treated to the soulful tunes of Dawn Landes, an American singer-songwriter and musician. It was the perfect way to conclude our last night in Asheville, embracing the city's dynamic arts and music scene.
Filled with breathtaking waterfalls, unexpected discoveries, and an embrace of Asheville's vibrant culture, the third day of our journey was truly exhilarating. We found ourselves grateful for the unforgettable experiences we had encountered along the way. Although thick fog had initially dashed our hopes of witnessing a stunning sunset, the day took an unexpected turn, revealing an extra layer of excitement and a profound appreciation for the spontaneity and inspiration that travel brings. It was a fitting and memorable finale to our time in Asheville, a city that continuously captivates with its awe-inspiring natural wonders and vibrant spirit.
Day Four
Biltmore Estate ~ Evening Flight
On the fourth day of our thrilling Asheville adventure, we awoke to yet another foggy morning, but our spirits were high as we knew it was an improvement from the previous days. With our flight not scheduled until 7 PM, we had the luxury of savoring a delicious breakfast downstairs at our hotel, eagerly anticipating the adventures that lay ahead at the historic Biltmore Estate.
Stepping foot onto the grand grounds of the Biltmore Estate was like stepping into the pages of an enthralling Edith Wharton novel. The sheer magnificence of this architectural masterpiece, reminiscent of the extravagant "Summer houses" of the Gilded Age, left us breathless with anticipation. It was a place that transported us to a bygone era of opulence and refined elegance. As we learned about its history, we couldn't help but be in awe of the visionary George Washington Vanderbilt, a member of the renowned Vanderbilt family, who began construction on the Biltmore Estate in 1889. Our imaginations soared as we envisioned the Vanderbilt family welcoming their loved ones from all corners of the country on that magical Christmas Eve in 1895 when they first opened the doors of this lavish estate.
While the tickets to the Biltmore Estate carried a hefty price tag, we soon discovered that they were worth every penny. The opportunity to spend the majority of our day exploring this sprawling estate was an experience like no other. We had heeded the advice to purchase our tickets in advance, and it proved to be a wise decision. By doing so, we not only secured our spot but also enjoyed a discount on the tickets. As we bypassed the ticket office, we felt a surge of excitement, knowing that we had precious extra moments to immerse ourselves in the wonders that awaited us.
The Biltmore Estate, with its magnificent house, breathtaking gardens, charming winery, and bustling Antler Hill Village, provided a comprehensive and unforgettable experience. We couldn't resist the temptation to sample the delectable blends at the winery, savoring each sip as we reveled in the ambiance. And for our young companions, the estate proved to be delightfully kid-friendly, with grape juice on offer to quench their thirst for adventure.
No matter the time of year, the grounds and gardens of the Biltmore Estate radiated a captivating beauty that stirred our souls. However, during the spring and summer months, the estate truly came alive, enveloping us in a tapestry of vibrant colors and fragrant blooms. Walking through the renowned Azalea Garden, spanning an expansive 125,000 acres, we found ourselves lost in a world of natural splendor. The main garden enthralled us with its captivating display of 50,000 tulips, 14,000 daffodils, and 1,000 hyacinths, creating a sensory symphony that touched our hearts. Inside the conservatory, we were spellbound by the ethereal beauty of the orchids and the exotic foliage surrounding us.
As we delved into the history of the Biltmore Estate, we were blown away by George Vanderbilt's amazing vision for the environment and conservation. Teaming up with Frederick Law Olmsted, the genius behind New York's Central Park, they created an awe-inspiring landscape filled with enchanting features like a sprawling rose garden, an elegant Italian formal garden, a thriving timber forest, and mesmerizing fountains. Everywhere we looked, the attention to detail was mind-blowing, and it made us truly appreciate the passion and dedication that went into crafting this remarkable estate.
But that's not all! We stumbled upon a delightful surprise called "Italian Renaissance Alive." This immersive experience allowed us to enjoy George Vanderbilt's favorite works of art in the most incredible way imaginable. Set to a powerful operatic score, we were transported into the world of the greatest artistic period in history. The masterpieces of legendary artists like Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli, and Caravaggio came to life right before our eyes. It was a mesmerizing and must-see event that left us feeling inspired and in awe of the artistic genius that graced the Biltmore Estate.
We couldn't believe our luck to have witnessed such a magnificent combination of nature, history, and art all in one place. The Biltmore Estate truly exceeded our expectations and left us feeling grateful for the opportunity to be a part of something so special. It was an experience that sparked our own creativity and reminded us of the endless possibilities that await us in the world. As we bid farewell to the Biltmore Estate, our hearts were bursting with joyous memories. Looking back on our entire Asheville escapade, we couldn't help but be grateful for the exhilaration and rollercoaster of emotions we experienced. It was the perfect grand finale to our wild ride in this mesmerizing city, where each day revealed thrilling surprises, cultural wonders, and jaw-dropping natural marvels. Asheville has imprinted itself on our souls, a constant reminder of the boundless inspiration and infectious energy that travel and a positive mindset bring. With our spirits soaring, we embarked on our homeward journey, carrying the very essence of Asheville and the unforgettable tales of our NC adventure.
