Berlin, Germany

A few weeks ago, my fiancé and I went on an adventure spanning eight different countries in just over two exhilarating weeks. The experiences we collected, the memories we made, are nothing short of priceless! Our journey had been in the making for some time, initially conceived as a seven-day cruise with some of our dear friends through the enchanting Baltic Sea. But then, in the spirit of wanderlust and the pursuit of MORE experiences, I decided to add an extra layer to our plans (hehe). I turned to my trusty travel companion, Viator, my favorite Tripadvisor Company. With its assistance, I found affordable destinations that could seamlessly complement our Baltic cruise. I'll confess, I may have gone a little overboard with the number of destinations I decided to include in our itinerary. But hey, why not, the world is vast and inviting!

As some of you might have seen on my Instagram story, our journey led us through an eclectic mix of countries and cities: Germany (Berlin + Warnemunde), Poland (Gdynia + Gdansk), Lithuania (Klaipeda), Sweden (Stockholm), Denmark (Copenhagen), Netherlands (Amsterdam), Belgium (Brussels), and the breathtaking landscapes of Iceland (Reykjavík). While we will unveil the majority of our trip within the next few posts, our voyage begins with the very first destination on our list - Berlin, Germany!

From my visits, Berlin has always reminded me of our human capacity for evolution and positive transformation. When you visit, you will see that this city has not only weathered the storms of history but emerged from them! From the remnants of the Berlin Wall to the pulsating heartbeat of Kreuzberg, Berlin weaves a compelling narrative of adaptation and evolution that has indelibly marked the world of travel. Having been fortunate enough to witness Berlin in both the crisp of autumn and the warmth of summer, I know that the below ten attractions has something to captivate every traveler's interest. 2. Reichstag Building

As you approach the Reichstag, the glass dome emerges like a glistening crown atop this historic edifice. It's a symbol of transparency and openness, a literal window into the heart of Germany's democracy. This is where laws are debated, decisions are made, and the future of a nation takes shape. But here's the real treat for travelers seeking an extraordinary experience – the dome itself. Ascend the spiraling ramp inside and emerge into an architectural wonder. The glass dome offers panoramic views of Berlin, a 360-degree canvas showcasing the city's beauty and history. You'll feel like you're floating above the rooftops, as Berlin unfolds beneath you, from the historic Brandenburg Gate to the modern skyscrapers of Potsdamer Platz.

Now, let me share a hidden gem within this iconic landmark - the Käfer Dachgarten Restaurant. Imagine savoring cuisine within the heart of Germany's democracy - where fine dining meets panoramic perfection. Every bite at Käfer Dachgarten is a tribute to German culinary craftsmanship, and every glance out the window is a reminder of the importance of open dialogue and democracy. It's a dining experience far from the ordinary, allowing you to savor the essence of Germany itself.

4. Berlin Wall Memorial

Continuing from the Gallery, you find yourself at the crossroads of history, where a once-impenetrable barrier divided a city, a nation, and the world. The hallowed ground at the Berlin Wall Memorial commemorates not only the physical structure of the Wall but also the countless lives it touched and the stories it shattered. As you wander through this solemn space, you'll encounter remnants of the Wall's concrete and barbed wire, stark reminders of an era defined by division. One of the most compelling features of the Berlin Wall Memorial is the original watchtower that looms overhead. Frozen in time, it once stood as a sentinel of oppression and surveillance. Today, it stands as a reminder of the Wall's separation legacy and to all of those who lived through this tumultuous period.

6. Charlottenburg Palace

Imagine a palace dating back to the late 17th century, a masterpiece of Baroque architecture that has stood the test of time and flow of centuries! Charlottenburg Palace, with its resplendent façade and manicured gardens, invites travelers on a journey into Berlin's regal past. You can almost envision kings and queens strolling through the grand halls, lost in the splendor of their own world.

What sets this palace apart is not just its architectural wonder but its remarkable resilience! Charlottenburg Palace survived the ravages of World War II with minimal damage, a testament to the enduring spirit of Berlin itself. It's as though the palace carries the scars of history as badges of honor, another reminder that beauty and history often emerge stronger from the crucible of time.

8. Museum Island

A UNESCO World Heritage site thats home to five magnificent museums, each a guardian of humanity's most profound stories in history, art, and culture. But before you even set foot within their halls, take a moment to marvel at the architectural brilliance that surrounds you! The buildings themselves are monuments to human creativity, masterpieces that resemble the treasures they house. One of the crown jewels of Museum Island is the Pergamon Museum, home to the stunning Ishtar Gate of Babylon. This monumental artifact, a marvel of ancient Mesopotamian craftsmanship, transports you back to a time when empires rose and fell, and civilizations thrived along the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. But Museum Island doesn't just focus on one era or one civilization; it's an extensive journey (aka lots of walking, wear good shoes) through human achievement! From the Egyptian artifacts at the Neues Museum to the unique art at the Bode Museum, every corner is a chapter in a global story of creativity and achievement.

One of the remarkable aspects of Museum Island is that it invites you to explore not just the past but also the evolution of artistic expression. The Alte Nationalgalerie, for instance, houses an extensive collection of 19th-century art, showcasing the transitions from Romanticism to Impressionism. It's a visual journey through changing aesthetics and world views. Overall, your visit to Museum Island will reveal that it offers an immersive experience, serving as a reminder that beauty and history often emerge from humanity's enduring quest for unity.
