Berlin, Germany

A few weeks ago, my fiancé and I went on an adventure spanning eight different countries in just over two exhilarating weeks. The experiences we collected, the memories we made, are nothing short of priceless! Our journey had been in the making for some time, initially conceived as a seven-day cruise with some of our dear friends through the enchanting Baltic Sea. But then, in the spirit of wanderlust and the pursuit of MORE experiences, I decided to add an extra layer to our plans (hehe). I turned to my trusty travel companion, Viator, my favorite Tripadvisor Company. With its assistance, I found affordable destinations that could seamlessly complement our Baltic cruise. I'll confess, I may have gone a little overboard with the number of destinations I decided to include in our itinerary. But hey, why not, the world is vast and inviting!

As some of you might have seen on my Instagram story, our journey led us through an eclectic mix of countries and cities: Germany (Berlin + Warnemunde), Poland (Gdynia + Gdansk), Lithuania (Klaipeda), Sweden (Stockholm), Denmark (Copenhagen), Netherlands (Amsterdam), Belgium (Brussels), and the breathtaking landscapes of Iceland (Reykjavík). While we will unveil the majority of our trip within the next few posts, our voyage begins with the very first destination on our list - Berlin, Germany!

From my visits, Berlin has always reminded me of our human capacity for evolution and positive transformation. When you visit, you will see that this city has not only weathered the storms of history but emerged from them! From the remnants of the Berlin Wall to the pulsating heartbeat of Kreuzberg, Berlin weaves a compelling narrative of adaptation and evolution that has indelibly marked the world of travel. Having been fortunate enough to witness Berlin in both the crisp of autumn and the warmth of summer, I know that the below ten attractions has something to captivate every traveler's interest. You will soon realize that Berlin's ability to reinvent itself while preserving its rich history is nothing short of remarkable!

1. Brandenburg Gate

Standing proud and defiant in the heart of Berlin, The Brandenburg Gate has seen Berlin's history unfold with a front-row seat. Once a representation of division during the chilling days of the Cold War.

But here's the magic of Berlin – it's a city that doesn't just remember its scars, it wears them with pride! Today, the Brandenburg Gate is a living testament to Berlin's unwavering spirit and Germany's reunification. As you stand before its colossal archway, you can almost hear echoes of the past. An iconic structure that reminds us that even in the face of division, unity can prevail!

So, when you find yourself in Berlin, don't just visit the following destinations, experience it! Walk through its arches, touch its weathered stones, and let its history wash over you. It's a potent symbol of both Berlin and Germany's past, present, and future.

2. Reichstag Building

As you approach the Reichstag, the glass dome emerges like a glistening crown atop this historic edifice. It's a symbol of transparency and openness, a literal window into the heart of Germany's democracy. This is where laws are debated, decisions are made, and the future of a nation takes shape. But here's the real treat for travelers seeking an extraordinary experience – the dome itself. Ascend the spiraling ramp inside and emerge into an architectural wonder. The glass dome offers panoramic views of Berlin, a 360-degree canvas showcasing the city's beauty and history. You'll feel like you're floating above the rooftops, as Berlin unfolds beneath you, from the historic Brandenburg Gate to the modern skyscrapers of Potsdamer Platz.

Now, let me share a hidden gem within this iconic landmark - the Käfer Dachgarten Restaurant. Imagine savoring cuisine within the heart of Germany's democracy - where fine dining meets panoramic perfection. Every bite at Käfer Dachgarten is a tribute to German culinary craftsmanship, and every glance out the window is a reminder of the importance of open dialogue and democracy. It's a dining experience far from the ordinary, allowing you to savor the essence of Germany itself.

3. East Side Gallery

Welcome to the East Side Gallery, a place where history is painted on the remnants of the Berlin Wall. As you approach this gallery, you'll be greeted by a kaleidoscope of emotions. Vivid murals and graffiti adorn the remnants of the Berlin Wall, transforming it into the longest open-air gallery in the world. Each stroke of paint on this concrete canvas tells a tale - of division, of struggle, and ultimately, of unity. It's here that you'll find yourself face to face with iconic images like 'The Fraternal Kiss' and 'My God, Help Me to Survive This Deadly Love,' both poignant symbols of the city's division and eventual reunification.

As you wander along the Wall, you might stumble upon artists at work, adding new layers to this ever-evolving canvas. It's the city's commitment to remembering its past while embracing its future!

4. Berlin Wall Memorial

Continuing from the Gallery, you find yourself at the crossroads of history, where a once-impenetrable barrier divided a city, a nation, and the world. The hallowed ground at the Berlin Wall Memorial commemorates not only the physical structure of the Wall but also the countless lives it touched and the stories it shattered. As you wander through this solemn space, you'll encounter remnants of the Wall's concrete and barbed wire, stark reminders of an era defined by division. One of the most compelling features of the Berlin Wall Memorial is the original watchtower that looms overhead. Frozen in time, it once stood as a sentinel of oppression and surveillance. Today, it stands as a reminder of the Wall's separation legacy and to all of those who lived through this tumultuous period.

5. Kreuzberg Neighborhood

Once upon a time, Kreuzberg was divided by the imposing Berlin Wall, a symbol of separation. But today, this very neighborhood has risen from its historical scars to become a vibrant hub of creativity. As you wander through its streets, you'll sense the energy, the rhythm, and the palpable diversity that define Kreuzberg.

One of the captivating aspects of this neighborhood is its multicultural vibe. Here, you'll find Turkish markets, Middle Eastern eateries, cozy cafés, and quirky boutiques all coexisting . It's a place where languages intertwine, where flavors collide, and where every corner seems to have a story waiting to be discovered.

But there's more to Kreuzberg than just its multicultural allure. It's a place of celebration, too. Every May Day, this neighborhood bursts into life with one of Berlin's largest street parties. Imagine colorful parades, live music echoing through the streets, and a palpable sense of community that transcends borders. It's a neighborhood that reminds us that from division, creativity can flourish, and from diversity, unity can thrive!

6. Charlottenburg Palace

Imagine a palace dating back to the late 17th century, a masterpiece of Baroque architecture that has stood the test of time and flow of centuries! Charlottenburg Palace, with its resplendent façade and manicured gardens, invites travelers on a journey into Berlin's regal past. You can almost envision kings and queens strolling through the grand halls, lost in the splendor of their own world.

What sets this palace apart is not just its architectural wonder but its remarkable resilience! It's as though the palace carries the scars of history as badges of honor, another reminder that beauty and history often emerge stronger from the crucible of time.

7. Berlin Cathedra

A true masterpiece of Protestant architecture! As you stand before the cathedral's imposing façade, you'll be struck by its intricate details, the delicate interplay of light and shadow on its magnificent domes. The Berlin Cathedral was consecrated in 1905, a relatively modern addition to the city's historic skyline. It was constructed during the reign of Kaiser Wilhelm II and was envisioned as a symbol of imperial power and spiritual devotion. The cathedral's architecture is a harmonious fusion of historicism and neo-Renaissance styles, creating an atmosphere that is both regal and deeply spiritual.

And just a stone's throw away from this awe-inspiring cathedral lies a culinary gem - DomAquaree Restaurant. This charming establishment sits on the banks of the serene River Spree, offering a picturesque setting for your dining experience!

8. Museum Island

A UNESCO World Heritage site thats home to five magnificent museums, each a guardian of humanity's most profound stories in history, art, and culture. But before you even set foot within their halls, take a moment to marvel at the architectural brilliance that surrounds you! The buildings themselves are monuments to human creativity, masterpieces that resemble the treasures they house. One of the crown jewels of Museum Island is the Pergamon Museum, home to the stunning Ishtar Gate of Babylon. This monumental artifact, a marvel of ancient Mesopotamian craftsmanship, transports you back to a time when empires rose and fell, and civilizations thrived along the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. But Museum Island doesn't just focus on one era or one civilization; it's an extensive journey (aka lots of walking, wear good shoes) through human achievement! From the Egyptian artifacts at the Neues Museum to the unique art at the Bode Museum, every corner is a chapter in a global story of creativity and achievement.

One of the remarkable aspects of Museum Island is that it invites you to explore not just the past but also the evolution of artistic expression. The Alte Nationalgalerie, for instance, houses an extensive collection of 19th-century art, showcasing the transitions from Romanticism to Impressionism. It's a visual journey through changing aesthetics and world views. Overall, your visit to Museum Island will reveal that it offers an immersive experience, serving as a reminder that beauty and history often emerge from humanity's enduring quest for unity.

9. Holocaust Memorial

In this somber memorial, you'll find yourself surrounded by 2,711 concrete slabs, each standing at varying heights. It's a representation of the countless lives forever altered by the Holocaust. The minimalist design of the memorial evokes a sense of disorientation and reflection, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the profound weight of history.

Walking through this labyrinth of concrete, you'll be met with a spectrum of emotions. The memorial serves as a silent witness to the horrors of the Holocaust, where innocent lives were extinguished by hatred and intolerance. It's a reminder of the consequences when humanity loses unity.

Yet, amidst the solemnity, the Holocaust Memorial also offers an educational experience that's essential for our collective understanding. It compels us to confront the darkest aspects of our history, urging us never to forget the atrocities committed and to ensure they are never repeated.

It stands as a reminder to our ability to transcend division and reach for the skies! Its sphere, like a gleaming pearl, contains a revolving restaurant that promises not just a meal but a dining experience like no other. As you ascend to the restaurant's heights, the world below transforms into a mesmerizing panorama, a 360-degree view of Berlin that stretches as far as the eye can see.

Dining in the revolving restaurant is a culinary journey where each dish is savored against the backdrop of Berlin's ever-changing cityscape.
