Continuing our journey from Berlin, we ventured onwards to our port in Warnemunde, Germany, where the adventure took on an entirely new dimension. Following the advice of seasoned travelers, we wisely arrived a day before our port date, allowing us to explore not only the charming streets of Kröpeliner Straße in Rostock but also the golden sands of Warnemunde Beach, where "Alter Strom" weaves its magic along the shoreline, adorned with an array of shops, cafes, and restaurants. However, it is important to note that after visiting the bustling beauty of Berlin, where every corner unveiled a new wonder, Rostock and Warnemunde offered a different pace, one that could be comfortably explored in a shorter timeframe. In just a day, we savored the essence of these coastal gems, leaving us ample time to prepare for the next leg of our journey—the departure through the Baltic Sea!!

I'll admit, I may have gone a bit overboard with the number of attractions included in our itinerary. But, as I emphasized in our previous post, why not embrace every opportunity to explore and savor the world's wonders? So, fasten your virtual seatbelt, and prepare for an unforgettable odyssey through the Baltic Sea. Gdańsk, Poland

Our journey led us to the bustling port of Gdynia, a vibrant Polish city cradled by the pristine shores of the Baltic Sea. Yet, the true treasure we sought was merely a 20-minute train ride from here – a city steeped in history and woven with captivating tales: the mesmerizing Gdańsk! Beyond the historical echoes, be sure to indulge in Poland's famous dishes like pierogi (delicious dumplings), kielbasa (sausages), and barszcz (beetroot soup). For a taste of Poland's culinary finesse, renowned restaurants like Kubicki, with its traditional Polish fare, and Dorsz, known for its seafood delicacies, await your palate. In addition to the culinary wonders, the city boasts a thriving craft beer scene with breweries like Browar Piwna and Browar Amber crafting brews that pay homage to Poland's brewing heritage. As you explore Gdańsk's charming streets, take a moment to savor the flavors of local ales and lagers.

Old Town

We started in the heart of the city in Old Town and boy is it breathtaking! Here, the very essence of Gdańsk's history is etched into the colorful buildings, each telling a tale of resilience and rebirth. This is where the Hanseatic past of the city comes to life, where centuries-old architecture stands as a testament to Gdańsk's enduring spirit. As you meander through the Old Town, your senses will come alive to the symphony of history. Every cobblestone underfoot whispers secrets of times long past. And there, amidst the charming labyrinth of medieval streets, you'll discover hidden gems. Perhaps you'll find yourself drawn to the city's famous amber, glistening like drops of sunshine. Vendors line the streets, offering this Baltic treasure in various forms, and trust me, you won't leave empty-handed. We certainly didn't!

Don't forget to pay a visit to the iconic Neptune's Fountain, a grand figure dating back to the 17th century. It proudly symbolizes Gdańsk's maritime heritage, reminding us of its centuries-old connection to the sea.

St. Mary's Basilica

One of Gdańsk's most awe-inspiring marvels—St. Mary's Basilica, affectionately known as St. Mary's Church. This monumental masterpiece of Gothic architecture beckons from afar with its towering spires and intricate façade. Stepping inside, prepare to be humbled by the sheer scale of this sacred space. St. Mary's Basilica can accommodate a staggering 25,000 people, a testament to its beauty and significance. The interior is a symphony of intricate wooden altars, stunning stained glass windows, and the pièce de résistance—an astronomical clock that leaves visitors in awe. In this hallowed sanctuary, you'll find a deep connection to Gdańsk's faith and heritage. The basilica's history is intertwined with that of the city, making it an unmissable stop on your Gdańsk adventure.

Westerplatte

Our final destination takes us to a place of profound historical importance—the historic site of Westerplatte. This is where the first shots of World War II reverberated through the air, as Polish defenders valiantly held off German forces for seven days. Today, as you stand amidst the remnants of the Westerplatte barracks and gaze upon the solemn monument honoring the defenders, you'll feel a deep sense of reverence. This place is a testament to the bravery and resilience of the Polish soldiers who faced overwhelming odds at the outset of the war, becoming an enduring symbol of national heroism. Walking through Westerplatte, you'll be transported back to that pivotal moment in history, where courage stood tall in the face of adversity. It's a place where history echoes through the rustling leaves and the wind whispers tales of valor.

Klaipeda, Lithuania

After a night of gentle rocking at sea, we now find ourselves on the shores of Klaipeda, Lithuania—a destination of nature, history, and artistry. While our visit coincided with rainy weather, it only added to the mysterious allure of this destination. As we wandered through the city, we couldn't help but notice the eerie statues and tales of ghosts that whispered through the streets. One of the more famous ghostly legends in Klaipeda involves a mysterious lady in white believed to be the ghost of Marie-Antoinette, the Queen of France during the late 18th century. According to local lore, she is said to appear in the courtyard of a historic building, and her presence is often associated with strange occurrences. As you can see, Klaipeda has cast a spell of curiosity upon us, beckoning us to explore its enigmatic atmosphere.

Old Town

Klaipeda's Old Town beckons with its cobblestone streets and historic buildings that hint at a bygone era. A distinct Germanic influence weaves through the streets, echoing its past as a Prussian town. But what truly sets this Old Town apart is its abundance of sculptures and whimsical street art. Among them, the "Cat with the Face of a Gentleman" has become an iconic figure, an embodiment of Klaipeda's playful spirit. As you wander these historic streets, you'll find yourself transported to a time where the lines between reality and artistry blur.

Curonian Spit

Unfortuently, we did not venture to this destination as we were very limited on time but from my research Curonian Spit is a very famous destination. From what I have read, Curonian Spit is a slender strip of land that stretches gracefully between Lithuania and Russia. This natural wonder has been sculpted by time and inhabited by the ancient Curonians, an enigmatic Baltic tribe. The Curonian Spit is famous for its "Dancing Forest," where pine trees take on unique, twisted shapes, as if they've been touched by magic. Legends whisper that the forest is bewitched, a story that adds to its mystique. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, it unfolds before us with breathtaking vistas, serene beaches, and trails that beckon hikers and birdwatchers alike.

Klaipeda Castle

Our journey through Klaipeda's history leads us to Klaipeda Castle, known as Memelburg, a formidable fortress that has withstood the test of time since the 13th century. This castle has witnessed the ebb and flow of powers and the city's resilience in the face of change. Today, within its ancient walls, you'll discover a museum that narrates the story of Klaipeda and its deep-rooted maritime heritage. The castle stands as a symbol of the city's enduring connection to the sea, providing a window into its past and its role as a bustling port.

Stockholm, Sweden

Stepping into the heart of Scandinavia, Stockholm welcomes us with open arms, fulfilling a dream that's always held a special place in my heart. You see, Sweden has forever been at the pinnacle of my travel bucket list—a land that resonates with my ancestry, a place where my roots find solace. And as we embraced this captivating city, it effortlessly met and exceeded all my expectations, leaving an indelible mark on my traveler's soul. Stockholm, with its unparalleled beauty and endless wonders, has etched itself deeply into my memory, a place I'm already yearning to revisit. There's so much more to explore, so many hidden corners waiting to be uncovered.

But let's not forget the delicious food adventure waiting for us in Stockholm. It's a mouthwatering trip through the tastes of Sweden, a country famous for its amazing food. From savoring the savory delight of Swedish meatballs to indulging in the smorgasbord of herring varieties and losing oneself in the delectable cinnamon-infused sweetness of kanelbullar (cinnamon buns), Stockholm's culinary scene is a true revelation!

During our stay, we had the privilege of dining at some renowned establishments, each offering a unique glimpse into Sweden's culinary tapestry. Pelikan, a culinary institution where tradition gracefully dances with sophistication, left an impression that lingers on my taste buds. And then there was Oaxen Slip, perched amidst stunning waterfront views, where Nordic cuisine takes on a modern, artistic form.

For those who, like me, savor the brewer's art, Stockholm's craft beer scene is a delightful discovery. Local breweries such as Nya Carnegiebryggeriet and Omnipollo craft beers that harmonize seamlessly with the city's contemporary vibe. It's a testament to Stockholm's ability to blend tradition and innovation effortlessly.

Explore The Historic Center of Gamla Stan

Our voyage commences in the enchanting embrace of Gamla Stan, Stockholm's Old Town. Here, the centuries unfurl before your eyes as you wander through one of Europe's best-preserved medieval city centers. Every corner of Gamla Stan is a testament to Stockholm's enduring history, where colorful buildings bear witness to the city's Hanseatic past. Strolling through the narrow, winding streets, you'll feel as if you've stepped into a living canvas. Cozy cafes, charming restaurants, and eclectic shops beckon you to linger and savor the ambiance. Stockholm’s Narrowest Street: Mårten Trotzigs Gränd

In the heart of Gamla Stan lies a hidden gem, Mårten Trotzigs Gränd, a cobblestone alleyway believed to have come to life in the 17th century. Its narrowest point, a mere 90 centimeters (35 inches) wide, beckons you to step into a whimsical world. During the summer, the street blooms with colorful flowers, creating a picturesque setting for unforgettable photographs. It's a testament to Stockholm's historic architecture, offering a quirky and photogenic experience for travelers with a keen eye for unique treasures.

Stockholm Palace (Kungliga Slottet)

Our journey through Stockholm continues with a visit to the grandeur of Stockholm Palace, the official residence of the Swedish monarch. This majestic edifice, dating back to the 18th century, is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture that stands as a living symbol of Sweden's royal heritage. Kungsträdgården

Vasa Museum

A shrine to maritime history and a treasure trove of ill-fated glory! The Vasa warship, which sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was salvaged centuries later, now rests in all its 17th-century splendor. Elaborate carvings, a towering presence, and a history riddled with drama make the Vasa one of the most well-preserved ships of its era. The Nobel Museum

Our final destination takes us to the heart of Södermalm, often lovingly referred to as "Söder." Here, vintage shops beckon treasure hunters, art galleries inspire with their creativity, and independent boutiques offer unique finds. This charming town, nestled on the picturesque island of Gotland, is a hidden gem waiting to be uncovered. Though my cruise plans to visit this enchanting destination were thwarted by inclement weather, I'm excited to share the knowledge I've gathered about this medieval marvel. As we embark on a virtual journey through Visby, be prepared to step back in time, to wander amidst the remnants of a bygone era, and to experience the allure of this captivating town.

Visby Cathedral (Visby domkyrka)

An architectural masterpiece that stands as a testament to centuries of devotion and craftsmanship. Belonging to the Visby Cathedral Parish of the Church of Sweden, this hallowed edifice was inaugurated in 1225. Approaching the cathedral, you can't help but be awed by its soaring spires and ancient stone walls, each etched with the stories of generations past. But there's more to this place than meets the eye. Venture up the steep steps that overlook the cathedral, and you'd be rewarded with breathtaking vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see. I am told that the views alone make the climb worthwhile, offering a panoramic glimpse of Visby's historical tapestry.

Stora Torget and St. Karin Cathedral Ruins

From the Visby Cathedral, the journey meanders down to Stora Torget, the beating heart of Visby. This vibrant square is a fusion of past and present, where charming cafes and restaurants coexist with the timeless traditions of old. As you step into this lively square, you'd be greeted by the hustle and bustle of a Farmer's Market that had sprung to life in the heart of the square. Different vendors set up shop, offering an array of local delights and artisanal treasures. The colorful stalls add a dash of modernity to this medieval setting, where the spirit of commerce has thrived for centuries. But the square holds more than just market days; it cradles the St. Karin Cathedral Ruins—a testament to Visby's rich religious history. This original cathedral was born from the hands of the friars of Sweden's very first Franciscan Monastery in 1250. Stepping inside these ancient ruins, you'd witness the care and reverence with which they have been preserved.

Gotlands Bryggeri

A famous brewery in Visby, Sweden! For beer enthusiasts, it's a true gem waiting to be explored. The brewery boasts a diverse array of craft beers, offering a delightful opportunity to relish local brews. What sets their beers apart is their dedication to using locally sourced ingredients, such as Gotland-grown barley and pure island water. This commitment to harnessing the flavors of the region adds a unique and captivating character to each of their brews.

As we set foot in the enchanting Danish capital of Copenhagen, prepare to be transported to a world of fairytale charm and modern marvels. Denmark's culinary scene is more than just a treat for the taste buds; it's a journey into the heart of Danish culture. Tivoli Gardens

Our adventure begins in the iconic embrace of Tivoli Gardens, a place where time seems to stand still, and the spirit of wonder knows no bounds. Nyhavn

Copenhagen's colorful waterfront district that traces its roots back to the 17th century. During our visit, we found ourselves irresistibly drawn to this picturesque and postcard-perfect neighborhood. We ended up spending most of our time here, hopping between cozy cafes, delightful restaurants, quirky tourist shops, and even stopping to grab fresh fruit from local vendors. As you stand amidst the enchanting scenery of Nyhavn, the iconic buildings that line the waterfront tell a story that's nothing short of captivating. It's easy to see why this place has been featured on countless postcards and in numerous films. The buildings, adorned with a palette of lively colors, create a vibrant backdrop that perfectly mirrors Copenhagen's deep maritime heritage. And don't even get us started on the historic wooden ships that grace the harbor! These elegant vessels, which seemed to have sailed straight out of the past, add an extra layer of charm to Nyhavn. We couldn't resist the temptation to explore them and imagine what life on the seas was like during the golden age of sailing.

The Little Mermaid (Den Lille Havfrue)

Since 1913, this iconic figure, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's beloved fairy tale, has watched over the city. A gift from Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen to Copenhagen, the statue has weathered acts of vandalism and even the loss of its head. Yet, it remains an indomitable symbol of the city's connection to the world of storytelling and literature. The Little Mermaid beckons you to share in her timeless tale, to embrace the magic of a city that finds inspiration in the pages of enchanting stories. Rosenborg Castle

Our final destination transports us to the stunning Renaissance-era Rosenborg Castle, a royal palace born in the early 17th century under the reign of King Christian IV. Originally constructed as a summer residence, this architectural gem now houses the Danish Crown Jewels—a dazzling collection that includes the crown, scepter, and orb of King Christian IV himself. Walking through the castle's beautifully preserved rooms, adorned with art and artifacts, you'll feel as if you've stepped into a fairy tale of your own.
