Where to stay

Iceland, known for its stunning landscapes, might surprise you when it comes to lodging options, especially in popular tourist areas. During our brief stay, we found Airbnb to be the most convenient choice, allowing us the flexibility our travel schedules demanded.

However, for those inclined towards established hotels, below are three noteworthy recommendations:

  • Hotel Holt, Reykjavik: A boutique hotel offering an intimate and cozy atmosphere, adorned with an impressive art collection. Its central location makes it an ideal base for exploring the city's attractions.

  • Canopy by Hilton Reykjavik City Centre: Embrace contemporary comfort and sophistication at this stylish hotel, situated in the heart of Reykjavik. Enjoy panoramic views and convenient access to nearby landmarks.

  • Radisson Blu 1919 Hotel, Reykjavik: Combining historic charm with modern amenities, this hotel offers a prime location near the harbor and various cultural sites. Experience comfort and convenience amidst Reykjavik’s vibrant atmosphere.

Going with the FLow

During our fleeting 24-hour layover in Iceland, we encountered the challenge of time constraints. With carry-on bags and an eagerness to maximize our experience, we swiftly picked up our rental car and settled into our Airbnb. Our mindset? Pure spontaneity.

Acknowledging the vast array of wonders awaiting exploration, we adopted an approach of complete improvisation. With no fixed agenda, we embraced the freedom to chase hidden gems, venturing out onto the open road, ready to unearth the unexpected. The route map below outlines our impromptu journey, while the details that follow chronicle the treasures we stumbled upon during our uninhibited exploration.

Although our schedule didn't allow us to indulge in the soothing thermal springs of the Blue Lagoon, we couldn't resist making a pit stop at this iconic location. Revered as one of the wonders of the world, the Blue Lagoon is famed not only for its stunning natural beauty but also for its reported healing properties. The Blue Lagoon is renowned for its mineral-rich, geothermal waters believed to have therapeutic effects on the skin due to their high silica content. Visitors from across the globe flock here to immerse themselves in this otherworldly experience, indulging in the lagoon's reputed rejuvenating powers.

Despite our attempt to secure a reservation, the brief visit still left us in awe of its natural wonder. While we missed out on experiencing the spa, our spontaneous detour allowed us to uncover countless other treasures Iceland has to offer. Below, enjoy our photos captured from just outside the Blue Lagoon, showcasing its mesmerizing allure.

Destination Road Trip

For travelers seeking a more structured itinerary, the following stops outline our planned destinations, although due to time constraints, we couldn't cover them all. There's always a next time for more adventures!

Evening in Reykjavik

After returning to Reykjavik, make the most of your evening exploring the city!

  • Visit Hallgrimskirkja Church: Ascend the 74-meter tower for panoramic views of the city.

  • The Sun Voyager Sculpture: Stroll along the waterfront to admire this stunning metal artwork resembling a Viking ship.

  • Rainbow Road: Explore this vibrant street filled with shops, cafes, and colorful murals.

  • Perlan Museum & Viewpoint: Head to Öskjuhlíð Hill for the glass-domed museum offering Iceland’s largest nature exhibition and a mesmerizing northern lights planetarium experience.

  • Bonus: Consider Viðey Island: If time permits, take a ferry to Viðey Island for an extra touch of exploration and discovery.

Next Morning

Before our flight, we indulged in a relaxing experience:

  • Sky Lagoon Spa in Reykjavik: We spent the whole morning soaking in the natural waters of Sky Lagoon, indulging in relaxation after our very extensive two-week European journey (Berlin, The Baltic Sea, Amsterdam).

Note: While experiencing the Blue Lagoon was on our list, last-minute planning resulted in unavailability. We've decided to save this iconic experience for our next visit to Iceland but as you saw above we did stop by to witness the unique springs.

Other Must-See Experiences

Below are some notable attractions and experiences in Iceland that travelers often seek, along with details about their significance and distance from Reykjavik:

Puffins Viewing

Iceland is home to numerous seabirds, including the charismatic puffins. Observing these charming birds in their natural habitat is a highlight for many visitors, as it would be fore me - I am bummed we didn’t get the chance! Locals say the best time to see puffins in Iceland is from late April to early August when they nest on cliffsides and remote islands.

Location and Distance from Reykjavik: One of the popular places for puffin viewing is the Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar), situated off the south coast of Iceland. The islands are approximately 2-3 hours by ferry from Reykjavik. Additionally, other coastal areas around Iceland, such as Dyrhólaey and Látrabjarg cliffs, also offer opportunities to spot these delightful birds.

Nordic Horses Interaction

The Icelandic horse is a unique breed known for its strength, stamina, and friendly temperament. Interacting with these horses offers a cultural insight into Iceland's history and the significance of these animals in Icelandic culture. As you saw in our photos we had the chance to meet some of these cuties but it was just out of luck and was not at all planned!

Location and Distance from Reykjavik: Horse farms and riding tours are available within a short drive from Reykjavik. Places like Mosfellsbær, around 20-30 minutes' drive, offer opportunities for horseback riding and getting up close with these remarkable animals.

Iceland is abundant with picturesque waterfalls, each offering its own captivating beauty. From majestic cascades to hidden gems, these falls are a testament to the country's stunning natural landscapes.

Location and Distance from Reykjavik: While waterfalls like Gullfoss, Seljalandsfoss, and Skógafoss are relatively close to Reykjavik (around 1.5-2.5 hours by car), other less frequented falls may require further travel. Dynjandi in the Westfjords and Hengifoss in the East of Iceland are examples of stunning waterfalls that are a bit further away but well worth the journey.
