Minnesota's North Shore: Road Trip Stops

Minnesota's North Shore is an adventurer's paradise! Whether it's your first time or your fifth, this scenic destination never fails to amaze you. And here's a little secret: visiting the north shore during the fall will take your experience to a whole new level! The vibrant colors make the trip that more beautiful, and we love it so much we tend to only go in the fall season. With over 10+ activities and attractions to discover on your visit, you'll always have things to do. From stunning lighthouses to picturesque waterfalls, here are 14 must-see road trip stops - all waiting for you to explore. So pack your bags and hit the road; the North Shore is calling your name!

Gooseberry Falls State Park

Looking for one of the more popular spots on Minnesota's North Shore? Look no further than Gooseberry Falls! This incredible place is a must-stop location, with a hike of the Falls Loop Trail (1-mile loop) that leads to stunning views of the Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls. And while summer can be busy, winter is the perfect time to explore this natural wonder—plus, you get to check out the frozen waterfall!

To beat the crowd, do what Adam and I did, visit the falls in negative-degree weather. Yeah, it was cold, and SLIPPERY but it made for a good adventure! Plus, we really enjoyed the “root beer float” waterfalls- as Adam would put it.

Know Before You Go:

Cost: $0

No parking pass is required for entry.

Time:

If you're heading to the falls, ensure you have plenty of time. It might only take 2o minutes to hike there and back, but there's so much to see and explore around the falls! You'll want to soak it all in, from the stunning falls to the look out of beautiful Lake Superior. Plan for AT LEAST an hour and make the most of your visit. Happy exploring!

Split Rock Lighthouse State Park

Ready for your next adventure? Head just a bit north to Split Rock Lighthouse, where you'll be treated to more beautiful views of Lake Superior and its distinct surrounding landscape. This historic landmark, completed in 1910, is a must-see for all nature and history lovers. Other than viewing the lighthouse from the outside, you can go up it but from personal experience… it’s not that exciting. However, I did capture the picture below and it is one of my favorites from our North Shore Trip. You always have to remember to snap some Insta-worthy pics all the while taking in the beauty of this incredible location.

Know Before You Go

Cost: $0 – Read the details

Don't get fooled by sites suggesting you must pay to enter Minnesota State Parks. You can explore the beauty of nature for free! But if you're looking for an exclusive experience, we've got you covered! For just $10, you can enjoy a guided tour, visit the lighthouse, and access the visitor center.

Time:

Only about 15 minutes. Easy access from the parking lot and breathtaking views will leave you feeling refreshed and recharged. Take advantage of this chance to unwind but remember to stop and take in the scenery to make the most of your time here.

Black Sand Beach

Did you know that Minnesota has a hidden gem of a beach? It's true! This black sand beach was kept secret from the public until 2015, but now it's gaining popularity among locals and tourists alike. Take a dip in the refreshing water or bask in the incredible views - either way, you won't be disappointed. Don't forget to hike to the top of the massive rock formations and check out the mini islands in the distance. Trust me, this is a unique MN experience, especially if you take up my suggestion below.

Cost: FREE

However, if you're looking for another exclusive experience, I suggest spending some money by picking up a picnic lunch and a 4 pack of beer- like we did!

Time:

Since we picked up a picnic and had some killer weather, we decided to relax and soak in this unique MN experience for over an hour. But if you are short on time, 15-30 minutes is all you need to dip your toes in and say you've experienced this gem.

Tettegouche State Park

You absolutely can't miss out on Silver Bay. This hidden gem has some of the most picturesque hikes without being too strenuous. Plus, with ample parking and easy access from Hwy 61, there's no reason not to stop by. My tip? Visit early morning or evening to avoid the crowds and enjoy your time to the fullest! I had a blast trekking High Falls and Shovel Point during sunset and even stopped by Palisade Head on the way back south! Read below for more information on all of those locations.

Know Before You Go

Cost: $7 FOR A DAILY PASS

For only $7, you can explore breathtaking views at High Falls, Shovel Point, and Palisade Head. The $35 year-round pass is a steal if you're a State Park regular. Or if you're a veteran like me, it's all FREE. Don't forget to grab your parking pass (online or kiosk) for High Falls and Shovel Point. With all three attractions done in only 2 hours, what are you waiting for?!

Palisade Head

Palisade Head is a popular spot to have some of the most beautiful views (I think all of the MN shore is beautiful :)) along Minnesota's North Shore. The best part? You can quickly drive up to the top and get sightseeing in no time! If you're feeling adventurous, there's also a path to the top where you can explore the rocky cliffs. Parking is easy, and even if you're up for a workout, there's an area to park at the base so you can enjoy a quick hike up.

Note: Avoid confusion and put Palisade Head into Google Maps directly. Remember, you can't park in the main lot for this one, but trust us, the views are worth it!

Know Before You Go

Time:

Driving to the top takes only 20-30 minutes, leaving plenty of time to explore the cliffs and snap some fantastic photos. Or, if you're up for a hike, trek from the bottom for a 30-40 minute walk.

Note: You'll drive 2 minutes north to the main Tettegouche lot from Palisade Head to the following two stops.

High Falls

Our recent fall trip to Minnesota's North Shore brought us to these beautiful falls (BEAUTIFUL ;)). There are a couple of options to reach the falls but trust me when I say THIS is the one you want to take advantage of.

  • 3-mile roundtrip hike: Park in their main parking lot and hit the trail to the right.

  • 1.5-mile roundtrip hike: Follow the paved road on the right side up to another (more minor) parking lot.

Follow the narrow trail through an autumn wonderland of vibrant trees to an overlook with panoramic views of miles of colors. Continue to the swinging bridge and loop down 83 steps to the stunning bottom.

Know Before You Go

Time:

Ready for a short and sweet adventure? Just drive up and take on the shorter hike—only an hour max—with time to relax, explore, and capture those one-of-a-kind moments at overlooks, the swinging bridge, and trails. Add an extra 30-45 minutes if you're up for the whole hike, and it's an extra mile and a half. Enjoy at your leisurely pace!

Shovel Point

Have you ever hiked to Shovel Point before? It's a hidden gem with stunning Lake Superior views that are worth climbing. And if you want to avoid crowds, go just before sunset. The 1.5 roundtrip trail is a moderate challenge with some uphill climbs that will get your body moving. But believe me when I say, it was well work the trek. Don’t believe me? Look below!!

Know Before You Go

Time:

This hike is perfect for those who want to take a break from their busy schedule. With an estimated time of 45 minutes, you won't have to commit your entire day. Although there may be few attractions throughout the trail, the overlooks will not disappoint. Once you reach the top, take your time to take in the breathtaking views. How long you stay is up to you!

Grand Portage State Park

Grand Portage State Park, one of Minnesota's top state parks, awaits you at the end of the North Shore stretch. Feel the rush as you trek to the top of Minnesota's highest waterfall, just a short 1-mile round trip. Glimpse across the border and wave hello to our Canadian counterparts hiking from the opposite side. Take in jaw-dropping views from all three viewing decks, and if you're up for more, hit the trails to Middle Falls for a 4.5-mile round trip.

Cost:

FREE - everyone’s favorite

Time:

Short hike, significant impact! Enjoy 45 min loop and 20 min to take in the view!
